I have to do a report on a German car that I would buy for my German class. The car can be from any point in time. I would prefer to keep to cars post 19th century.

W124 Mercedes Benz. Unbreakable engines, vault-like body construction, rugged and durable.

Most successful would be the VW bug, best though would probably be the 300SL IMHO.

A few flakeyness issues with soot traps in this country causing head overheat on diesels and issues with 3.5l diesels ovalling their cylinders might mean the W-124/W-123 diesel-off sub competition would go to the OM617 five. Arguably a tougher body by a whisker on the W-124, though, and taxi service record probably gives it the win overall.

The Chrysler Crossfire.

J/K, I rather like this one I found in a craigslist ad the other day. I like it because I am currently on the hunt for a convertible and it's affordable. To me the best car is the one that fits my needs and one that I can afford, haha. I should add I know very little about Mercedes, but remembered this ad, so I thought I'd contribute it. So.... NPOCP?

If your going to suggest a Benz, why would you suggest an e-classs? It's like the accord of Europe. What he needs to do his project on is the cosworth powered, homologated (slow) race car, huge winged, 190E evo

The 'greatest' is probably the Beetle or the Golf - the former for being a People's Car, the latter for being a high-quality People's Car that's actually nice. The most awesome is probably the Bugatti Veyron (yeah yeah yeah, ugly no manual blah blah, but it was a rock-solid 400km/h record-breaking luxury ultimo-supercar that they made because they could ). The coolest, I'd say is the Porsche Carrera GT.

The one I'd have under One Car Garage rules would be a Porsche 911, not sure which but likely a 993 of some description. Or a current Audi RS6. But probably the Porsche.

I'd much rather have my diesel W123, its not like those engines are unreliable! Mercs became pretty undesirable for me in the looks department once the W124 came around.

This was my W123...a 240D. I loved that car with an unhealthy passion, and actually traded on a 2.5 turbodiesel W124. Before answering the OP's question I thought a good bit about W123 vs W124...and went with the W124 due to the body structure. The W124 was freakish in that respect...I'd never been in something so darn rigid. Not that the W123 was flimsy but the W124 was just plain stout.

This is my 83' 300D, I got it in CA when I was there. Can't beat a CA car. I have 108k miles on it now, it had 96k when I bought it. I wanted an 83 because its the last year with no computer, I deleted my EGR as well.

I'm sure there are quite a few parts that are specific to that car, so the classic center has to order them. I have had a few old Mercs and I have looked for many used parts before going to the classic center. Most parts are rebuildable, thats the beauty of well built old cars. I think the list price for a Ponton steering wheel is $2200 or something. I found one on Ebay!

NSU Prinz TT because that boot is propped open for downforce and cooling (I have no idea if the downforce claim is true, but it sounds good). Who need a fancy grill allowing the motor fresh air when you can drop the motor in the boot and just prop it open? Also, few have heard of it, so Jalop points there.

The Opel-Lotus-Omega

Kinja'd!!!

Also known as the Vauxall-Lotus-Carlton, but it was opel's design, and there were fewer opels making it rarer, and better!
Now it doesn't look like much, but this car made a mind bending 377 horsepower and 350 ft-lb of torque in 1990! The M5 wouldn't make that much power for another 10 years or so!
And, unlike the post "gent's agreement" cars, this magnificent rocketship was allowed to do 177mph (285kph) by physics!
not to mention, it's gearing allowed for it to hit 55 mph in 1st gear!
Is this not the best german sports sedan, and the forefather of all things fast in Germany today?
